At their March 2, 2017, meeting, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners recognized County Manager Doug Derrer for his upcoming retirement and thanked him for his years of service. After more than nine years with the Forsyth County government, Derrer is retiring from his position as county manager on April 2.


Derrer began his service with Forsyth County in February 2008 as deputy county manager and was named county manager in March 2009. During his tenure as county manager, Derrer was responsible for managing the $100 million courthouse and jail construction project among many other initiatives.


Prior to joining Forsyth County, he had more than 31 years of local government experience including having served as the public works director and public safety director for Hall County, the warden at the Hall County Correctional Institution, the city manager for Flowery Branch and a police officer for Miami-Dade County in Florida.
